For our next in-person session, we have invited the immensely talented cinematographer, Jermaine Edwards to lead a practical workshop on the craft and process of shooting on 35mm.

With his recent work on Akinola Davies Jr’s BAFTA-winning debut, My Father’s Shadow, Jermaine has already established himself as one of the most exciting cinematographers currently shooting on analogue film.

In this session, Jermaine will break down the technical and creative intricacies of shooting on 35mm, exploring the process of choosing the right film stock, Grain vs Noise, light metering and his overall approach to lighting on the format. How do you work with different skin tones? What is the difference between working on 16mm and 35mm? How do you navigate the creative challenges of working on celluloid?

Utilising a set and actors, Jermaine will demystify the fundamentals of working on this extraordinary format.

This session is ideal for newcomers to the medium as well as experienced artists wanting to learn more about analogue filmmaking technology and language.

JERMAINE EDWARDS

Jermaine Edwards is a Cinematographer and alumnus of the prestigious National Film and Television School. Since graduating he has worked on numerous narrative projects including the BFI Short, The WALK starring BAFTA-winning actor Adeel Akhtar, the short premiered at the 2023 London Film Festival.

His most recent work includes BFI feature project 'ISH' with Director Imran Perretta which premiered at the Critics' Week section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival and Akinola Davies Jr’s BAFTA-winning 'MY FATHERS SHADOW' recipient of the Caméra d’Or Special Mention at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
